flax seed oil chocolate crème

Here is a delicious thing I found at Harvest Wholefoods in Grey Lynn: chocolate pudding made with flax seed oil! It’s a super-tasty, if a bit pricy, way of getting in some omega-3s. It recommends eating daily for maximum benefits.

Tru2U Flax Seed Oil Chocolate Crème is made in Christchurch from Canterbury-grown oil, and is labelled as vegan-friendly. The company also makes flavoured flaxseed oils which sound pretty good. Their website lists lots of retailers in Auckland, including Harvest.

Flaxseed oil can have a pretty strong flavour, but it’s not really noticable in this pudding – it’s just smooth, rich and chocolatey without being too sweet. Today I had a couple of spoons of the chocolate crème, with dried cherries & strawberries and roasted hazelnuts, & it was good:

  1. While flaxseed is certainly a good source of omega oils, it’s worth noting that the balance of essential fatty acids in hemp seed oil is much closer to human requirements. I haven’t tried it yet though as my partner bought some from the eco store in Victoria park recently but it was past its use by, so we took it and will get some more when they have replacement stock.

“The proportions of linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid in one tablespoon per day (15 ml)of hempseed oil easily provides human daily requirements for EFAs. Unlike flaxseed oil, hempseed oil can be used continuously without developing a deficiency or other imbalance of EFAs. This has been demonstrated in a clinical study, where the daily ingestion of flaxseed oil decreased the endogenous production of GLA”

  2. Thanks for that – I’d read that before and actually looked for hemp seed oil at Harvest, but didn’t spot any. I have bought “Hemega3” (?) brand in the past.

I definitely don’t think chocolate pudding should be anyone’s sole source of Omega-3s, but it’s nice to have a range of options!
