Hazelnut cupcake with apricot tofu creme. This cupcake was big – muffin-sized almost. The not-too-dry, subtly spicy cake was nicely balanced by the not-too-sweet creme topping. Little pieces of dried apricot were a nice addition. Overall, pretty good, though could happily have been smaller.
Chocolate on chocolate. This was another case of unnecessary indulgence – I didn’t really want chocolate cake for afternoon tea – so I may be judging it unfairly, but this wasn’t Revel’s best cupcake work. That perfectly piped frosting tasted kind of like sweetened chocolate Olivani. The cake itself was plain chocolatey – a little dry, but saved by the margarine-ish topping. It wasn’t bad, but not my favourite. But as a recent blog commenter reminded me, I’m lucky to be living in a city where I can find such a range of vegan food that some of it isn’t my favourite. & as always, the coffee was excellent.
