We moved house a couple of weeks ago and we’re still settling in, so things have been a little quiet on this blog. One new thing I have to report is a new favourite local café!
At first glance, the menu doesn’t look especially vegan-friendly, but it turns out there is a lot to choose from.
My favourite thing to order for brunch is mushrooms on sourdough toast with a side of avocado. The mushrooms aren’t vegan as they appear on the menu, but the kitchen will make a delicious vegan version on request, topped with chives and watercress. Twenty Three’s sourdough is a special thing, full flavoured and chewy, and is great with just avocado as well.
Food in the cabinet isn’t labelled vegan, but there are always at least a couple of vegan salads with simple, delicious flavours – things like cannellini bean with fennel, capsicum, balsamic, olive oil & smoked paprika. I haven’t tried their pumpkin, spinach & pinenut sandwich yet, but it’s another option.
There’s usually a vegan chocolate cake as well, best enjoyed with an excellent soy flat white.
As well as the café food, Twenty Three sells locally-produced hot sauce & olive oil, KeepCups and other bits and pieces. They have a box of Wanaka Chocolate bars next to the till – their plain dark, orange and mint bars are all vegan and lovely.
