Here’s something I found at Ripe Deli this morning: Bhuty Dark Chocolate from Fire Dragon Chillies. It combines Schoc‘s beautiful handcrafted, fair trade dark chocolate with flakes of Bhut Jolokia chillies – one of the hottest in the world.

There’s half a chilli in each of these bars of chocolate, and you can feel the heat in even a tiny nibble; the caution advised on the packaging isn’t just for show. After eating half a square, my mouth was pleasantly warm for about 15 minutes.

If you enjoy the combination of chilli and chocolate, this is probably the most exciting example in New Zealand. Schoc also makes a couple of other chilli-based flavours that are delicious, and only a little bit warm. If you’re not so big on spicy chocolate, you should check out some of Schoc’s other flavours at the the SAFE shop, The Sweetest Little Chocolate Shop in MidCity Arcade on Queen Street, or the other Auckland stockists listed on Schoc’s website. Some favourites of mine: toasted coconut, earl grey tea, smoked paprika and strawberry & black pepper.
