Exciting things have been happening at Tart Bakery in Grey Lynn in recent months. Tart’s founder and head baker Phillipa went vegan, and she’s been testing out all kinds of new recipes to expand the bakery’s vegan offerings.
Including – remarkably – vegan cream donuts! Filled with thick cream and jam, topped with a half maraschino cherry, coated in sugar – these are a perfect vegan version of the classic New Zealand bakery donut. The one I ate was gratifying on two levels: the tasty combination of chewy dough, sugar & cream, and the nostalgia value of getting to enjoy a treat I hadn’t indulged in since high school.
Other vegan treats you might find behind the bakery’s counters include croissants, danish pastries, cinnamon donuts, cheesecakes, savoury pies and sausage rolls. Saturday morning is the best time to visit; the bakery tries out new recipes each weekend, and their delicious experiments often sell out before lunchtime. Tart’s Facebook page usually lists what’s on offer.
It’s open Monday to Saturday – 6.30am-3.30pm weekdays and 7am-3.30pm on Saturdays. Vegan cream donuts are available every day, but they sell out fast. You can call before you visit (09 376 5535) and they’ll put one aside for you.
