Lots of Auckland’s cafés are still closed for the holiday season; one that reopened today is Dear Jervois in Herne Bay.
Their menu includes a few things that are vegan or can be made that way, and incorporates nut-based dairy products in a few dishes. One thing that’s delicious and animal-free by default is a plate called the Be Good Vegan. As the name suggests, this dish has a health-foodish vibe: it’s a big stack of quinoa and brown rice, with beetroot, pumpkin and home-made kimchi, topped with cashew aioli and edible flowers.
The smoothie section of the menu is also mostly vegan. Last time I visited, I had the Superfood Peanut Butter Blueberry smoothie: brown rice protein powder, peanut butter, banana, blueberries, organic almond milk & coconut ice cream.
Dear Jervois is at 234 Jervois Road in Herne Bay. It’s open every day: 7am-4pm weekdays, and 8am-4pm weekends.
