An Auckland Vegan is a blog about the best places to find vegan food and products in Auckland, New Zealand. I share the vegan menu items I find at Auckland’s cafés and restaurants, review products and sometimes post about relevant local events and news.
I started An Auckland Vegan a few years ago in response to a lack of local vegan information online. It seemed like the only way I learned about new places to eat was by swapping tips with friends, and I wanted to make it easier for visitors and new vegans to find the best local options. I’ve travelled a bit, and when I’m planning a trip I always google ‘vegan’ and the place I’m heading to so that I can learn about what I can look forward to eating.
In late 2008, it looked to the world like Auckland wasn’t a vegan-friendly place, and I wasn’t sure whether that was wrong. When I started blogging here, I thought that I would write about the cupcakes at Revel & the SAFE shop then struggle to think of what to say about Auckland beyond K Road, but the range of treats for vegans in this city has expanded hugely over the last few years. There are always new things to discover.
I am Moira Clunie. I’ve been vegan for the last thirteen years, and vegetarian since I was 14. I am passionate about sustainability, and want to avoid causing unnecessary suffering. Yes, those are non-leather boots I’m wearing; no, I don’t eat fish; sure, if a monkey made me a vegan sandwich, I’d eat it as long as the monkey was adequately compensated for its work.
