Trying to work out where to have brunch next? Here’s another option to add to your list: Mondays Wholefoods in Kingsland.
More than half of Mondays’ menu is vegan. Focused on nourishing, simple food, the café was created by two food bloggers who share an interest in healthy, real ingredients: Eleanor (Petite Kitchen) and Hannah (Health Yeah).
When we visited for brunch recently, I had a rye sourdough toasted sandwich that reminded me of ’90s café paninis in a nice way: flat bread layered with roast vegetables, marinated mushrooms, salad and at least one ingredient noone had met in the ’90s: house-made cashew aioli.
The all-day breakfast section on the menu is all vegan, and also includes a chia pudding parfait, vanilla almond oatmeal, and a delicious-sounding half-papaya boat filled with coconut, vanilla and roasted nut granola, seasonal fruit and coconut yoghurt.
Brunch dessert was a raw chocolate-banana avocado mousse pie: rich, decadent and dark, while avoiding too much sugar. Practically a health food.
Mondays’ coffee is Supreme, and you can enjoy it just about any way you want. I took a break from my usual soy flat white to try a nutmilk coffee (nice, but I prefer the flavour of soy); oat milk is also an option. You can also have a fat black coffee with coconut oil, or an iced espresso drink with coconut ice cream.
Besides coffee, Mondays’ drinks menu is extensive – including matcha latte, various kinds of tea, iced drinks based on coconut ice cream, fresh juice, kombucha and a range of raw superfood smoothies. Pictured is a berries and cream smoothie with blackberries, strawberries, goji berries, acai, dates, coconut cream and banana.
The café’s counter cabinet is stocked with various other baked goods and raw treats to enjoy with coffee or take away. Pictured: a beautifully creamy chocolate vanilla slice that lived up to the promise of Mondays’ suggested hashtag: #insanelydelicious.
Mondays Wholefoods is at 503B New North Road, in the Kingsland shops. It’s open every day: Mon-Fri 8am to 3pm, and weekends 8am to 4pm.
