Another contender for best vegan pizza in Auckland is Gina’s.
It’s just up the road from Monica’s, but is at the slightly pricier, aperitifs before dinner, end of the spectrum. Gina’s does offer takeaways, but it would be a shame to miss the experience of eating in.
They say on their website: “You want quiet darling? Then you’ll have to go elsewhere because we don’t do quiet.” This is true. Gina’s is always full, bustling and rowdy. Aside from food, Gina’s other main product is (boy-flavoured) eye candy (they’re quite self-aware in this respect). They sing (it always seems to be someone’s birthday), they flirt good-naturedly, they affect Italian accents (rumour has it they’re mostly Brazilian). Service is friendly and “exuberant” (their website, again, which includes a good amount of detail and an online booking system).
Anyway, the food… The Alla Salute pizza is vegan! It’s garlic, onions, capers, artichokes, olives, basil, fresh rocket & fresh chili on a tomato base, with no cheese. Apart from the pizza, some of the side dishes are probably vegan. I’ve eaten a vegan spaghetti dish there in the past, but it’s not on the menu currently. Vegetarian options are helpfully marked (but cheese-centric), as are “pescetarian” options (bizarre – why would you specially label the things that contain fish?). It’s by no means a vegan establishment, but it’s great to have options.
